When Tara Foley began to plan her wedding, she knew in her heart that there was going to be one thing missing from it: Her grandmother.
At nearly 103 years old, her grandmother was put on hospice in Florida. The nurses were not comfortable with her flying to Texas, where Tara was getting married. Her heart was failing, and Tara knew she didn’t have much time left. So she decided to bring the wedding to her.
“I knew in my heart she was trying to hang on to get there somehow,” said Foley. “I decided to fly to her with my wedding dress, it was unaltered and didn’t fit yet but none of that mattered.”
Tara lied to her family the weekend she decided to go visit her nana. She got all dressed up in her wedding gown, and even got her hair and makeup done to really feel like the real deal. She then hired a photographer to capture the moments that would’ve been at her wedding if her grandmother was able to fly—hugs, kisses, and so many special moments together.
“When I said goodbye to her that night, I think we both knew it would be the last time we would see each other,” said Foley. “She grabbed my cheeks with her hands, looked me straight in the eye and said ‘I love you very much.’ I am so blessed to have this be my last memory with her. She was beyond an amazing woman!”
Tara’s grandmother passed a mere 27 days after the photos were taken, but the memories will last forever.
Since Tara never told anyone about her visit, she wanted to surprise everyone before she walked down the aisle with photos of the moments. She had them printed and showed them to her family on her wedding day—and of course, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
“Words cannot explain how much these moments mean to me and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life,” said Foley. “Her smile and her laugh are forever etched in my mind and the love between us will live in my heart. This was one of the greatest days of my life.”
