A favorite sport among some social media users is to judge and critique other people’s kids, parenting styles, looks, outfits, and pretty much everything else. While celebrities are used to being in the public eye and the scrutiny that comes with it, some people just don’t have boundaries.
You’d think that small kids would be off limits. They’re little. They’re loving and loveable. They’re generally unaware of human treachery. And their world heavily consists of their parents’ influence and unwavering love. But poor little Silas Timberlake wasn’t able to escape social media trolls.
A picture of his famous mom Jessica Biel holding him and getting in a smooch was posted to Instagram by his uber-famous dad Justin Timberlake. Let’s get this straight first: Silas is three years old and is the only child of Biel and Timberlake.
Three is a good age to be carefree and innocent, but web commenters have taken issue with the fact that the little boy has long hair. So, some people have commenced to their favorite pastime of parent-shaming over his hair. Yup.
The meanness was so thick you couldn’t cut it with a pair of shears. Here’s what some folks had to say about this picture:
“I thought that son was a daughter which is just another reason why it shouldn’t grow out.”
“Wow .. I didn’t know you had a daughter, I thought you had a son.”
“Nope. He needs a haircut.”
There were many more, but supportive comments also flowed in, hailing the parents for allowing his lovely locks to grow out. They also shut down much of the negative feedback by pointing out how ridiculous it is to criticize a child’s appearance.
“If everyone would just mind their own business and stop judging, we’d all get along much better. What’s it to you what length this boy’s hair is? Where’s the law on it? And he can’t kiss his mother?! You people are starved for love.”
“Not your kid. Not your business.”
“Maybe instead of teaching our children to change themselves so their peers accept them, we should teach our children to be more accepting of others, regardless of their differences.”
In addition to yammering about his hair length, some also complained about his romper. Some people will always find something wrong with others.
But people noticed the love in the picture along with Silas’s cute appearance. He’s just a little kid spending time soaking up some mommy love. More importantly, the Timberlake family seemed unbothered by the negativity and continued to enjoy their trip to Paris.
Since this is not a case of a child being ill or in danger, this raises the issue of when it’s ever okay for strangers to talk about other people’s children. Shaming someone for looking different shouldn’t be acceptable, and kids should be off the table. Your opinion?
What do you think of little boys with long hair? What are your thoughts on social media commenters who go after kids? Are you okay with parent-shaming or not?
