Hollywood has seen its share of successes when it comes to rebooting, remaking, or remixing old flicks, and now there’s another movie in the works. Get ready for a new version of Sister Act.
Whoopi Goldberg, who played the lounge singer/nun Deloris in the first two films, stopped by Good Morning Britain for a chat. She said that Disney has plans to create a new addition to series, but it looks like she may not be reprising her role.
The original 1992 comedy starred Goldberg as a Las Vegas club singer who joined a convent as part of a witness protection program. It earned her a Golden Globe and raked over $200 million worldwide while the sequel – starring a young Lauryn Hill – also fared well.
Goldberg told the morning show that Disney intends to go in a different direction with the film, and more than likely it will be an updated version of the original rather than a sequel.
“We’ve been all over Disney begging. They’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. So it won’t be Sister Act 3 it will be a brand new rendition of, and I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was part of it.”
Speaking on the movie last year to Entertainment Weekly, Goldberg also said that although she would love to play Deloris again, she would expect and understand a younger actress filling the role. So far, Disney has not commented and it’s unclear whether we’ll see the other nuns back in their habits.
