Just in Time for Valentine’s Day, You Can Name a Cockroach After Your Ex

Most people use Valentine’s Day to tell their loved ones how much they care about them. They buy roses. They buy chocolates. They buy teddy bears. They spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy meal that includes heart-shaped everything.

And that’s great for those people in love. But what about the other half of the world—those who are single, or even worse, those who are hurting after a recent break up?

While these people would probably love to throw darts at their ex’s face and let Valentine’s Day scoot on by without thinking twice about it, one company found a better way for these people to deal with their feelings.

Hemsley Conservation Centre (HCC), a zoo in the UK, has just introduced their new “name a cockroach” program, and it’s sheer brilliance.

“For those that don’t quite require revenge, there’s another way to make you feel better about getting back at your ex this Valentine’s Day,” the company wrote on their website. “The HCC is offering the chance to name a cockroach in honor of your friend’s worthless ex-“someone” on this special holiday of love.”

Getting dumped stinks. It’s even worse when the person is a total jerk. A cockroach, if you will.

This program is perfect for those with some kind of “cockroach” in their lives. One who it would just feel good to get to call them that—and then just be able to know that there is an actual real live cockroach in the world with the name Andrew. Or Andrea. Or Mike. Or Michelle. Whoever.

In addition to getting to name the cockroach, you’ll also receive a certificate for doing so. But don’t worry, the name doesn’t actually appear on the certificate, just in case your ex one day saw it. The zoo says they did that to not “fuel a fire.” Man, they really thought of everything here.

But will it feel as gratifying if there isn’t proof that you named your cockroach after your ex? Oh, fear not again. There’s proof. The names will appear on HCC’s “roach board” at its cockroach enclosure.

The best part about it, is that naming a cockroach only costs $2, and proceeds will go towards future HCC’s projects. So you can name a whole bunch of cockroaches if you wanted to—if you have that many “cockroaches” in your life. You might be surprised at how much it makes you feel better!

If you’re wondering why the zoo is encouraging simply naming cockroaches and not actually adopting them for your own where they could probably make a little more money, they also have a good reason for that: “We think adopt is a little too strong,” the HCC stated. “After all—you probably don’t want to adopt your ex.”

That’s fair!

How funny is this notion of naming a cockroach after our ex? We think it’s a perfect way for those who got newly broken up with to help cope with their feelings—what a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Do you plan to name a cockroach this holiday?
