Country Star Morgan Wallen Apologizes After Video Footage Shows Him Hurling Racial Slur
If you’re a fan of country music, then you know the name Morgan Wallen. The 27-year-old singer currently has 5 out of 10 hits on the Billboard chart “Hot Country Songs,” and at the Country Music Awards, he won “New Artist of the Year.”
Even though Wallen is a huge country music star, if you turn on Spotify’s “Hot Country” today, you won’t hear any of his songs. It seems that Wallen has made some missteps recently.
TMZ posted a video of Wallen using a racial slur after arriving at home. He gets out of a car and walks towards the house. Then he turns to talk to a friend still in the car. He is captured on camera saying to his friend, “take care of this…n—–.”
If you would like to see the video for yourself, you can watch it here, but be warned, it includes very inappropriate language.
Now, Wallen is apologizing. In a statement written to TMZ, Wallen explained, “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”
Is it too late? Nobody is on his side at the moment. Cumulus Media isn’t playing any of his music. In a memo, employees were notified about the racial slur and instructed not to play his music. Variety obtained a copy of the memo which reads, “MORGAN WALLEN — EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Team, unfortunately country music star Morgan Wallen was captured on video Sunday evening using a racial slur. Effective immediately we request that all of Morgan Wallen’s music be removed from our playlists without exception. More to follow.”
Fellow country star Kelsea Ballerini tried to stand up for Nashville in a tweet. She wrote, “The news out of Nashville tonight does not represent country music.”
However, another country star, Maren Morris, disagrees. She tweeted back, “It actually IS representative of our town because this isn’t his first “scuffle” and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless. We all know it wasn’t his first time using that word. We keep them rich and protected at all costs with no recourse.”
This isn’t the first time Wallen’s actions have backfired. Within the last year, he was arrested for public intoxication and lost an opportunity to perform on SNL after he partied with strangers without wearing a face mask. The show did allow him back a couple months later.
Does it surprise you that Wallen used a racial slur? Do you believe his apology is heartfelt? Do you think his actions represent Nashville?
