Who among us can honestly say they don’t love the crunch of a nice, crisp potato chip? Anyone who says they’re indifferent is straight up lying. Potato chips are borderline addictive — let’s just there’s a reason Lay’s uses the tagline, “Bet you can’t have just one.”
They’ve got us. It takes an inhuman amount of willpower to actually only eat one potato chip, and we all know it.
Unfortunately, there’s quite a few downsides to our favorite snack. For instance, it’s getting more and more expensive to go buy bag of potato chips, and these mass produced chips are laden with additives. Worse, the healthier the chip you buy, the more costly the bag becomes.
So then the answer seems obvious, right? Just make your own potato chips at home! But between the vat of oil you’re using and the extensive bake time, are you really saving that much on calories, time, or money by going this route?
This means you can be snacking in less time and enjoying yourself more — you’ve essentially taken a lot of guilt out of your favorite guilty pleasure.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started on Gemma’s brilliant recipe:
- 2 medium sized potatoes (Russet, or any type you like)
- 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Ice water
- BBQ Flavor
- 1½ teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon chili powder
- Ranch Flavor
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley, crushed
- 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon ground pepper

You’ll notice, there’s a variation for both BBQ and ranch flavored chips. Gemma goes into detail at the end of her video on how to flavor your chips using these ingredients, and both sound absolutely amazing.
If you’re not a big fan of either flavor option, feel free to make your own! We bet you could make a delicious salt and vinegar batch of chips, or even just a ground pepper flavor for something simple and delicious.
It’s also important to note that Gemma’s microwave is 1200 watts. In a microwave of this power, the chips will only need to cook for about a minute and a half on both sides. However, check the wattage of your microwave so you can adjust that cook time accordingly.
