Did you know that, according to a CBS News poll, Paul McCartney is America’s favorite Beatle? Personally, we love each and every member of the Fab 4 (yes, even Ringo!), but we have to agree that McCartney is by far the most charming. Don’t believe us? Then you certainly have never seen the legendary songwriter make James Corden tear up on that VERY emotional episode of Carpool Karaoke.
Currently, Paul McCartney is hitting the talk show circuit hard, and lucky for us, he made a stop at our all-time favorite late-night show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Fallon, of course, is an incredibly dynamic host, but one of the things that his audience loves him most about him is his undeniable chemistry with his musical guests. The SNL alum certainly has innovated late-night by keeping music and musical artists at the forefront of his show–he has the legendary Roots crew as his house band for God’s sake!
So, when we heard that the incomparable Paul McCartney was going to be on Fallon’s show to promote his new album, Egypt Station, we knew that these two would come up with some awesome television.
How Paul McCartney and Jimmy Fallon made late-night television magic
The episode, which premiered on September 5th, featured not only an amazing interview with the legendary rock star but also a pre-recorded sketch with the show’s hilarious host. Earlier on in the show, though, McCartney performed a song off of his new album and, in a really cold open, danced with the show’s host and model Kendall Jenner of all people.
But, our absolute favorite part of the show was when Paul McCartney and Jimmy Fallon decided to play one of the best pranks ever on a slew of unwitting 30 Rock visitors outside one of the building’s elevators.
You see, the TV host and the Beatle decided that it would be fun to surprise all of the guys and gals who come through the halls of 30 Rockefeller Center– and when we say surprise them, we mean REALLY surprise them! In a series of scenes, the two uber-famous jokesters are seen, well, MAKING a scene every time the elevator door’s open.
The dynamic duo sets up a number of different bizarre circumstances–they casually lounge in recliners as they read newspapers, they play a match of ping pong, and they even perform a really crazy magic trick. Granted, this is all happening once the elevator doors OPEN.
Something tells us these 30 Rock visitors got a lot more than they bargained for when they decided to visit the NYC landmark!
Now, we could sing the merits of this hilarious sketch all day, but you should really see it yourself to get the whole effect. To watch Paul McCartney and Jimmy Fallon prank these surprised visitors, be sure to watch the video below. Instant classic!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this brilliant sketch. Did you think it was clever? Are you a fan of Jimmy Fallon’s show? Who’s your favorite Beatle?
