Last week, Dr. Fauci warned fans not to gather for Super Bowl parties. In a normal year, fans would gather together for large Super Bowl parties, but Dr. Fauci recommended that due to COVID-19 we all stay home and watch the big game from home with our immediate family members this year.

Not everyone listened.

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl, fans poured out onto the streets of Tampa and packed sports bars. Not only were these fans ignoring social distancing recommendations, but they weren’t wearing face masks either. 

Dr. Fauci wasn’t the only one who tried to encourage fans to take safety precautions while watching the Super Bowl. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor signed an order that required everyone to wear a face mask during Super Bowl parties and celebrations. This mask order included any festivities that occurred inside or outside. This order went into effect on January 28 and is set to end on February 13th. 

Castor explained to WFLA, “As I’ve told everybody we all know how to avoid COVID-19 and that’s by simply wearing a mask. I’ve been yelling for the Bucs all night long, you can do it with a mask on.”

Tampa wasn’t the only place where fans were celebrating maskless. Over in St. Petersburg, rapper Curtis Jackson (better known as “50 Cent”) held a party in an airplane hanger at the Albert Whitted Airport. Nobody wore a mask there either.

More than 28,000 people in Florida have died from COVID-19. Hopefully there won’t be another spike in cases due to the maskless, crowded parties last night.
