Princess Diana’s personal jewelry collection was a group of treasured pieces that she accumulated over the years. After her passing, many of her precious jewels were set aside to be kept in the family.

One of the provisions she made upon her death was for some of her jewelry to be left to her two sons, William and Harry. Her sapphire engagement ring given to her by Prince Charles is one of the most famous pieces, and was given to Duchess Kate as an engagement ring from Prince William.

Now, with Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle taking center stage, royal watchers wondered if he too would put a sentimental spin on his beloved’s ring. He did! What we know is that the prince designed the ring himself, and he wanted to make it extra special.

By now, you’ve probably caught a glimpse or two of the lovely creation sitting on Meghan’s ring finger. It features one large diamond flanked by two smaller ones on each side. In a popular interview with BBC News, Harry and Meghan explained how he proposed, but there was also a little discussion about the details of the ring.

The central diamond was sourced from Botswana, a place that holds special significance for the couple. Early in their courtship, the two enjoyed a trip to the country which allowed them to spend quality time with each other. It was a meaningful trip and turning point in their relationship.

The other two diamonds came from Princess Diana’s sapphire brooch, which she later had refashioned into a choker to suit her style. He thought it would be a nice way to honor his mom as he begins his new life with Meghan, starting his own family. A part of her would always be with them.

It’s set on a band of Meghan’s favorite, which is yellow gold, and was made by Queen Elizabeth II’s official jewelers, Cleave and Company. What’s so remarkable is that the ring is very unique to Prince Harry and Meghan and weaves parts of their love story together.

Losing their mother so young still affects Princes Harry and William, and they’ve both admitted that sometimes they still cope with the grief of that loss. One of the most beautiful ways they have found to honor her and keep their connection to her strong is through sharing a part of her with their own loves.

It’s not unheard of for a marriage proposal to include a ring that was passed down through generations, but Harry’s spin on the tradition is quite sweet. In fact, both princes have started their own tradition by incorporating their mother’s precious jewels into their new families. We wouldn’t be surprised if the next generation does the same!
