Britney Spears has had her entire life including her finances managed by her father, Jamie Spears, for 13 years. Perhaps this was necessary at first. She did seem to have a very public breakdown, but time has passed, and according to Spears, her father has definitely not had her best interest at heart. Instead, Spears describes the conservatorship as similar to slavery.
It might be hard to understand how someone who is rich and famous could feel like they’re in jail in their own home, but after listening to Spears’ testimony to a Los Angeles judge, it definitely sounds like she is not happy and not free to make her own decisions. She’s not even allowed to decide if she wants to have a baby or get married.
The judge denied Spears’ request to end the conservatorship, and the #FreeBritney movement has grown even stronger. Several celebrities, such as Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, and Spears’s ex Justin Timberlake, have all stepped up in support of her. Now, Madonna has added her name to this list. The iconic singer posted a photo of herself in a Britney Spears t-shirt in her Instagram stories along with the caption, “Give this woman her life back.” She added, “Slavery was abolished so long ago!” She ended with the words, “Britney we coming to get you out of jail!”

On July 14, a judge will look at petitions from multiple people to step away from their part in controlling Spears’s life. Her court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, has filed a petition to resign, and Bessemer Trust, the wealth management company that oversees Spears’s finances alongside her dad, has also filed a petition to immediately stop overseeing her finances. In addition, Spears’s manager, Larry Rudolph, has resigned.
Why do you think the judge denied Spears’s request to end the conservatorship? Do you think Spears is in a modern version of slavery? Do you think Madonna will be able to help Britney end the conservatorship?
