Extreme dieting is nothing new—but it isn’t something that is typically supported by health professionals. Food gives us fuel, and limiting or eliminating it completely (called a crash diet) is something that’s very frowned upon in this day and age.

That’s why it’s no surprise that Kim Kardashian received major backlash after seemingly bragging about how she lost 16 pounds by crash dieting to fit into her gown for the 2022 Met Gala. It was Marilyn Monroe’s dress that she wore for JFK’s 1962 birthday party, so it wasn’t able to be altered. And thus, she took matters into her own hands with an unhealthy method of eating.

Lili Reinhart, who has spoken before on body image, was especially ticked at the comments from Kim. “So wrong. So f**ked on 100s of levels,” the Riverdale actor wrote on a recent Instagram story. “To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala. When you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word.”

She continued on the post: “To walk on a red carpet and do an interview where you say how starving you are … because you haven’t eaten carbs in the last month … all to fit in a f**king dress?”

Kim’s message certainly doesn’t quite paint the best picture for people who may struggle with body image or extreme dieting. In fact, it could even glorify it for others, which can lead to unhealthy, damaging effects.

“The ignorance is other-worldly and disgusting,” Lili added. “Please stop supporting these stupid, harmful celebrities whose entire image revolves around their bodies.”

Obviously, she’s coming off pretty angry—and we don’t blame her. But her irritation mostly comes from how toxic the dieting industry can be.

“I am not generally an angry person but I swear to god, the toxicity of this industry sometimes really gets to me,” Lili said. “And I have to do my little Instagram-story rants to release my rage.”

Kim has yet to say anything else or comment on what she said.

We don’t recommend anything Kim did, especially just to fit into a dress! What are your thoughts on crash diets and celebrities openly admitting to doing them? How can we help young people avoid succumbing to these types of extremities?
