The nickname for the name Meghan is usually pretty simple: “Meg.” However, for Meghan Markle, there’s a vastly different nickname for her coined by King Charles III—at least according to author Katie Nicholl in her latest book, “The New Royals.”

The nickname began because of Markle’s personality: She’s one tough cookie. In fact, she’s so resilient that her father-in-law had to come up with just the right name to really hone in on these characteristics.

“Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience,” Nicholl wrote in her book.

Nicholl followed up with an example of a time Meghan showed just how tough and resilient she was: It was during the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018, when she and Prince Harry made an appearance with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“It was, according to one aide, the moment William and Kate, who was heavily pregnant, realized they needed to up their game,” Nicholl explained. “The Cambridges had already signaled their intention to be more than ‘ornamental royals’ and had, along with Harry, made a huge success of their mental health campaign Heads Together. But Meghan was the breakout star of the foursome. She was polished, passionate, and funny, using all her TV-honed skills to present her case. That was a wake-up moment for William and Kate when they realized that Meghan was very impressive, very confident, and very capable, according to a source.”

Not long later, in January 2020, Meghan and Harry took a step back from their royal duties. Since then, they’ve moved to California to focus on their family and become more financially independent. This was not something the rest of the royals were super supportive of—including having their wax figures removed from Madame Tussauds, a wax museum in London.
