On Oscar night, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. He joked that her shaved head made her look like G.I. Jane. Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, seemed to be laughing about the joke at first when the cameras turned to him, but when the camera turned back to Rock, something happened.

Smith walked on stage and slapped Rock in the face. Then he returned to his seat and yelled at Rock not to talk about his wife.

Since this incident, many people have spoken out about what happened. Smith was the first to do so during his Oscar speech later that night when he accepted the Best Actor award. He has since apologized for his actions. The Academy also apologized for the way they handled the situation, saying they really weren’t prepared for anything like this to happen.

Many people have stood up for Rock, defending him and worrying that fans might try to copy Smith’s actions and hurt other comedians. In fact, what appears to be a copycat incident has already taken place.

Previously, during her show “Red Table Talk” she had only hinted that future episodes would discuss the incident at the Oscars. Now, she has finally broken her silence.

On a recent episode of “Red Table Talk,” Pinkett Smith started the show by looking directed at the camera, addressing the audience. She said that “thousands” of people have reached out to her to tell her their hair loss stories, and that inspired her to talk about it on the show. She added, “Now, about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile. The state of the world today? We need them both, and we all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for listening.”

Pinkett Smith’s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and daughter, Willow Smith, joined her at the table to discuss Pinkett Smith’s alopecia which has caused her to suffer from hair loss for several years. Pinkett Smith said, “There’s so many people walking around who have alopecia and that we don’t even know. I felt like it was so important to allow the alopecia community, our brothers and sisters, to tell their story. I think that people don’t understand what alopecia is and they don’t understand the effects of it.”

Then a mother named Niki Ball joined the women at the table. Her teenage daughter also suffered from alopecia, and she was bullied at school because of it. Her daughter committed suicide just 2 weeks before the incident at the Oscars. Ball said, “We’d heard from so many people. I didn’t realize how huge and amazing that community is.”
