It’s been 12 years since the legendary wildlife conservationist and television host, Steve Irwin passed away. The man known as the “Crocodile Hunter” was a beloved icon, but what made the tragedy even worse was the fact that he left behind a wife, Terri, and two small children, Bindi and Robert.
If you’re a fan of animals–especially crocs– you already know that the Irwin family has forged ahead in their work and have continued operating the world-famous Australia Zoo. The Australia Zoo is the very same place Steve Irwin grew up, a wildlife sanctuary that his parents, Bob and Lyn Irwin, opened back in the 1970s.
Now that the Australia Zoo has been family-owned for an amazing three generations, the Irwin family is ready to continue their dearly departed’s television legacy. In an announcement released just this week, Animal Planet revealed that it was in plans to produce a new show called Crikey! It’s the Irwins.
According to the network, the show will follow a documentary-style format and will detail the daily comings-and-goings of the Australia Zoo, particularly the animal rehabilitation aspect of the operation’s wildlife hospital. The Australia Zoo houses a whopping 1,200 animals at any given time, so clearly there won’t be any dull moments on the show!
What the Irwin family is doing today
20-year-old Bindi Irwin and her 14-year-old brother Robert are no strangers to the camera. Shortly following the death of their dad, Bindi starred in Bindi, the Jungle Girl for Discovery Kids and Robert hosted another show for the network called Wild But True. The teenager has even taught television audiences about different types of animals on our favorite late-night show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The two have done a very good job of staying in the public eye, so it’s no surprise that the siblings are social media wiz-kids, something that their father never got the chance to master.
Their Instagram pages are filled with images of the Australia Zoo, but many of the posts that they share feature the beloved Crocodile Hunter himself.
Robert was only a toddler when his father passed away, but he got to share some pretty cool memories with him. Did your dad teach you how to pet a baby crocodile?
Bindi regularly shares family photos with her nearly 2 million followers. If you take a look at her comments sections, you’ll quickly see that this is a young woman who gets a lot of support– so many of Steve Irwin’s fans want her to continue honoring his legacy!
