Remember that time when you first woke up after getting your wisdom teeth taken out? Yeah…us either. The only thing we can even sort of recall is our mom telling us not to pull the bloody gauze out of our mouth. Other than that, most all of the details surrounding the painful surgery are fuzzy at best. Once we got home, we went to sleep, and rose the next morning with a sore jaw.
Of course, our mom has a much different recollection of the event. Even years later, she still regales us with tales of our embarrassing time in the recovery room, where we told the dentist that he was “really, really good looking” and then later, at home, when she had to wipe tears from our eyes as we re-lived the traumatic experience of losing our childhood dog.
Yep, it’s fair to say that waking up from anesthesia is an experience that, while we may forget, our caregivers definitely DON’T. Recently, we came across a video that illustrates this idea to a ‘t’—and hilariously so!
The viral clip stars a devoted wife who is taking care of her husband after he had an MRI with an angiogram, a procedure that required him to undergo general anesthesia. Lucky for us, Silvia Caswell, the wife in the clip, was smart enough to bring her phone with her into the recovery room to capture her mate’s priceless comedown.
Not more than two seconds into the clip does the husband utter this sweet, yet kind of bizarre compliment. “You look so hot,” he drowsily proclaims before giving his wife that blank, thousand-yard stare that’s oh-so-synonymous with folks who’ve just had anesthesia. This, our friends, pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the video.
The doting, albeit super confused husband, is just so enamored with his honey’s body—and for good reason, the guy has somehow completely forgotten that she has spent the last year shedding 77 pounds! Apparently, some mental wires got temporarily crossed during the ordeal because the guy just couldn’t get over his wife’s weight loss makeover.
We’ve gotta say; we kind of don’t blame the dude. After all, Silvia’s transformation is an incredible one!
Why some experience memory loss after anesthesia
Although this husband’s confusion may seem concerning, there’s a reason why his medical student wife, Silvia, keeps such a cool head during the ordeal.
According to studies compiled by Live Science, it’s relatively normal for patients who have undergone general anesthesia to experience memory loss for days or sometimes even weeks following the procedure. In fact, about 37% of young adults and 41% of elderly patients are still under the memory-altering effects from the meds, even after they are discharged from the hospital.
Lucky for us, scientists are currently hard at work on finding a solution to the problem. Experiments, where mice are given drugs that block the receptors disturbed during anesthesia, could end up lessening the blow for patients in the future. Sounds great!
Now that you know all about why this temporary memory loss happens to some people, it’s time for you to watch this husband’s uproarious anesthesia comedown for yourself. We promise this one will have you roaring!
We’d love to hear your take on this hilarious viral video. Did you experience similar confusion coming off of general anesthesia? If so, what happened? Do you have a funny story of your own surgery that you would like to share?
