How to Use Your Expired Groupons

Groupon and other daily deal sites are great for finding deals for restaurants, salons, activities, other stores, etc. But they do have a very definite downside: they expire. If you don’t think you’ll use your Groupon in time, there are definitely ways of selling them. However, if you’ve let them expire, hope is not lost. Here are some suggestions for you to try out courtesy of Money Crashers:

Contact the Business Where the Deal is Offered

Businesses who work with Groupon always have the ability to use their discretion in matters like extending the expiration date of Groupons. So if you won’t be able to use your Groupon in time, try contacting the business directly. There’s a good chance they’ll be able to work something out:

I had one particular Groupon deal for a swanky Italian restaurant that was set to expire while I was out of the country on a business trip. I hated to lose the promotional value and had plans to make a girls night out of it, so I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager. He graciously allowed me to use my Groupon deal in full after its expiration date.

Ask Groupon to Intervene on Your Behalf

If all other options fail, try going directly to Groupon. Call them to see if you can get them to extend the expiration date of your deal so you can still make use of it:

A friend of mine had purchased a Groupon deal that allowed her to get her carpets cleaned for a fraction of what the service would cost otherwise. She procrastinated to the point where she had just a few days to either use her deal or lose the promotional value. The carpet cleaning company refused to extend the expiration date of her deal, so she called Groupon and asked them if they would help her work with the carpet cleaning company. Groupon obliged her request and were able to negotiate extended terms with the carpet cleaners.
