Personal question: If you were presented with the opportunity to live past the age of 100, would you take it? It’s quite the conundrum and one that elicits some pretty deep thoughts. On one hand, you would be able to say that you have experienced a full century of life. Pretty cool bragging rights, if you ask us!
But, on the other hand, you will likely be dealing with all of the pain and immobility that comes with being a centenarian—not to mention the fact that you would, statistically speaking, be the only person from your peer group that’s still kicking. Talk about a double-edged sword!
Now, despite all of the drawbacks, we, for one, would definitely choose to live as long as we possibly could. We did our research on the subject and it turns out that plenty of other people are in our camp, too, but, unfortunately, it looks like only a handful of them will have the opportunity to live such long lives.
How do we know that? Well, there are quite a few pieces to this puzzle that can help to predict longevity—mostly, healthy habits and good genes—but some of these traits are relatively hidden.
Here are a few of the more surprising signs that you could live past 100 years old…
-
You have tons of buds
We all know that time spent with good (i.e. drama-free) friends can renew our spirits, but did you know that pals can also extend our lives? A study conducted at Brigham Young University showed that folks with large groups of friends tend to live longer than those without many buds. Yet another reason to make time for the ones you love!
-
Your momma is young
Although society usually has a lot of negative things to say about young moms, it turns out that this group’s kids could end up living very long lives. A University of Chicago study found that people who were born to a mother who was under the age of 25 at the time of their birth are TWICE as likely to live to 100. Impressive!
-
You donate your time
Do you spend your free time volunteering? If so, then good on you! Not only are you doing your part to make the world a better place, you will likely be able to continue volunteering for MANY more years to come. You see, people who regularly donate their time can cut their chances of premature death by almost half. Talk about a win-win!
