With Halloween right around the corner, we’re sure that all of you parents out there are bracing yourselves for the onslaught of sugar highs from all of that trick-or-treating loot. It’s a tricky thing; on one hand, you don’t want to deprive your kid of celebrating, but on the other, you don’t want to have to deal with the behavior once those sweets kick in!
Several years ago, our all-time favorite late night host, Jimmy Kimmel, decided to capitalize on this problem by facilitating a Halloween prank that has since been played thousands of times by parents from all over the globe.
The premise is simple: On November 1st, a parent turns on their camera and tells his or her kid that they have eaten all of their Halloween candy. It seems like a simple set-up, but it’s one that always manages to evoke some really colorful reactions from the trick-or-treaters themselves.
Jimmy’s been asking for footage from these joke-playing parents for the past 6 years, and we’ve noticed that the kiddos usually experience at least one of the following reactions:
1) uncontrollable crying tantrums that involve throwing themselves on the floor
2) physical violence most often directed towards their parents
Now, those truly are the eyes of a kiddo scorned!
Heck, the behavior isn’t necessarily something that most parents would want to be televised to an audience of millions, but we understand why these moms and dads submit the clips—some of them are just TOO funny not to share.
For instance, in last year’s clip, a whole host of children are told by their sadistic moms and dads that they would not be enjoying their Halloween candy because it had already been eaten. If you think about it, it’s a particularly cruel prank, especially considering children devote a whole night for snagging those treats!
One little girl sums up her frustrations perfectly. “I hate you!” she shrieks at her mother. “You ate all my candy that we worked so hard to get; we were walking for hours!”
While we certainly don’t condone this little gal’s choice of words, we certainly do understand where her anger is coming from!
Just the same, not every tyke had a complete meltdown when being told about the missing sweets. In fact, one adorable standout did her best to keep it together when her parents revealed the bad news.
She first says that they can “go get more candy tomorrow,” but when her mother mentions that it “tasted really good” the poor gal couldn’t meet their gaze. Awww! We wish we could give her all of the candy in the world. Poor kid!
