In the midst of the dangerous cold gripping the country, a good Samaritan stepped up to pay for hotel stays for 70 homeless people in Chicago. They were originally staying outside on the streets.
The group had a tent camp set up and had been using 100 propane tanks to keep warm when one of them exploded. Firefighters and police showed up to assist and were worried about the potential danger of the other tanks, so they worked to place the group with a Salvation Army warming center.
The organization was then notified that an anonymous citizen wanted to pay for hotel rooms for the homeless. The Salvation Army set up the center in the city with volunteers ready to assist when they got the call. Not only did the person take care of them that night, but for the rest of the week.
In light of the fire, the Chicago Fire Department posted a message on Twitter asking the public not to donate propane tanks to the homeless. Volunteers have been handing out blankets and grills in the midst of the blistering weather.
