Who would have thought you could turn plain old saltine crackers into a sweet dessert? Trisha Yearwood, apparently. The Food Network shares the country star’s simple and easy recipe for “Sweet and Saltines,” and we just have to give it a try.
You’ll Need:
– Cooking spray
– 35 to 40 saltine crackers
– 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
– 1 cup light brown sugar
– 8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
How To:
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Line 1 large (or 2 small) jelly-roll pans with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
- Arrange the saltines salt-side down in a single layer.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Boil for a few minutes, until it turns a caramel color.
- Remove from the heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly.
- Put the jelly-roll pan into the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes, until just bubbly. Watch carefully!
- Remove from the oven and pour the chocolate chips over the crackers. When the chips melt a bit, spread them over the crackers with a knife.
- Transfer the pan to the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes, until completely cold and formed into one big sheet.
- Break the chocolate-covered saltines up into pieces and store in an airtight container.
I never in a million years would have thought of this one on my own. What about you? Have you heard of “Sweet and Saltines” before now? What other unexpected sweet treats do you like to make?
