George Clooney Confirms Rumor That He Gifted His 14 Best Friends $1 Million Each
What would you do with a million dollars? Well, if you were one of George Clooney’s closest friends, that question would be less of a fantasy and more of a reality.
Clooney, who was recently featured in GQ’s Men of the Year issue, told the magazine that he did in fact gift his 14 closest friends $1 million back in 2013. The rumor has been in circulation for years, but without confirmation, it almost seemed like a tabloid rumor that had been dreamed up by a hopeful recipient.
“I just thought basically if I get hit by a bus, they’re all in the will. So why the f–-k am I waiting to get hit by a bus?” Clooney told the magazine.
He says he came up with the idea after receiving his paycheck from the movie “Gravity”, at which point he felt it was due time to pay his wealth forward.
“I was a single guy. All of us were aging. I was 52 or something. And most of my friends are older than me,” he told GQ. “And I thought, what I do have are these guys . . . I’ve slept on their couches when I was broke. They loaned me money when I was broke. They helped me when I needed help over the years . . . And I thought, you know, without them I don’t have any of this.”
A grand gesture like this naturally needed a noteworthy presentation, and Clooney didn’t disappoint in his delivery. According to the actor, the struggle he faced wasn’t deciding whether gifting the funds was a sound financial move, but rather the logistics of physically procuring such a large sum of money.
After some finagling, Clooney says he was able to obtain the $14 million from an undisclosed Los Angeles location. Clooney, his assistant, and “and a couple of security guys that were sh–ting themselves” transported the funds in a beat-up van that read “Florist” on its side. Then, the real fun began.
The actor packed the money in high-end luggage bags, and invited his friends over the next day. Once they arrived, he pulled out a map, pointing out all the places in the world he has been able to visit as a result of their help and support. Hypothetically — or so they thought — Clooney then asked how you could repay someone for that.
“And I said, ‘Oh, well: How about a million bucks?’”
So, they opened their suitcases full of cash, and the rest is history.
The “Ocean’s Eleven” star, now 59, made the decision to go ahead with the giveaway before he had a family of his own. He is now married to human-rights attorney Amal Clooney, with whom he has 3-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander.
Despite his overwhelming generosity, the payday most likely didn’t break the bank. According to Forbes 2019 report, Clooney has a net worth of approximately $500 million.
