South African figure skater Kira Meyer died at age 12 after an electric scooter accident.
News of Kira’s condition first emerged nearly a week earlier, when her mother, Angelique Meyer, revealed in a Mother’s Day Facebook post on May 10 that the 12-year-old had been hospitalized in the ICU and placed in a coma after an electric scooter accident.
“She suffered a brain injury and was taken to Milpark Hospital by helicopter,” Angelique wrote at the time, per Us Weekly. “The brain scan did not bring good news, but we know God is in control. Please pray with us. The next 48 hours are very important for recovery and that the swelling will go down.”
Three days later, on May 13, Angelique shared another update, saying Kira was no longer under sedation, though her condition remained unchanged.
“Her vitals look normal, heart is still beating, but she has not responded at all,” she wrote.
According to a Facebook post shared by her mother, Angelique Meyer, on May 16. In the post, Angelique said three doctors had declared Kira brain dead.
“I have been sitting with my phone on my lap for the last 30 minutes to get the words. Kira was declared brain dead by 3 doctors yesterday. Her lungs also gave in. Although she is still connected to machines, she is already safe at Jesus’ feet. This is an unnatural death as the drs explained and tests and processes must be followed before she is declared dead whole. At this point, we as her parents are still trying to make sense of everything and we are not yet ready for the post with “rest in peace” or “angel wings” we as her parents will speak the words when the time is right, when her little body is no longer connected to Machines don’t, and when we have a time of death. Thank you for everyone’s prayers that carried us through this time, please do not stop praying.”
Throughout the ordeal, Angelique repeatedly thanked supporters on social media for their prayers and messages of encouragement. On Tuesday, May 19, she announced that a memorial service for Kira would be held on Friday, May 22.
South African Figure Skating paid tribute to Kira in a social media post on Sunday.
