This Fake Package Targets Porch Thieves By Covering Them in Glitter and Fart Spray

When package thieves decide to take a walk on the illegal side, they never know that they’ll wind up getting. That is why it would behoove them to be on good behavior in case someone decides to get them back.

But of course, that is not the case. As you will see in this detailed video, dishonesty didn’t get these crooks what they wanted, but it definitely gave them a heaping portion of just deserts. It is beautiful and full of glitter.

Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer and current YouTuber, is well-versed in creating sophisticated contraptions that get the job done. Like many of us, he found himself the victim of porch pirates who were violating his doorstep, so he decided to do something about it after police could not.

With the help of another inventive buddy, Rober spent six months rigging up a trap for package thieves that included GPS-trackable phones that recorded the bandits, glitter, and fart spray. Sounds good already, doesn’t it?

In a video posted on YouTube yesterday, Rober explains how the bait was constructed. By all means you can watch this entire thing, but we are going to give you the condensed version.

Four phones were set up in casing that allowed for them to rest at an angle, which worked best for the camera eyes to view the package snatchers. Four phones were used so that images could be captured from any of the four sides of the box.

A motor was attached to a small can of fart spray that went off every 30 seconds with five sprays each. Out of a motorized funnel spins a symphony of colorful, EXTRA FINE glitter specks that blasts in all directions. Unlucky box stealers got a spray of glitter and more than a few sprays of face-melting fart odor.

Only when the package left his home would the GPS kick in and cameras start rolling to catch the thieves’ actions and reactions on film. One of the smartest things Rober did was enable the phones to upload footage to the cloud. That way, he would be able to access it whether he recovered the package or not.

In the majority of these cases – if not all – the villains would toss the box after being surprised by the glitter/fart bomb. Who would have thought that glitter and farts could work so well together?

Since uploading the video and footage of people getting their comeuppance, it’s gone viral, racking up over 10,000,000 views in just one day. Many are wishing that Rober would consider selling the device but that is highly unlikely to happen.

For now, we can all enjoy watching the beauty of this vigilante justice unfold on our screens. It may be nice, it may be naughty, but perhaps it will give potential thieves a reason to think twice. Click below to see this in action!
