If you haven’t heard by now, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, her fiancé of two years and (and significant other of four years), have officially called it quits on their relationship. If the COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t happened, the two would’ve been married already—and apparently filing for divorce.
So what happened to cause the split? Apparently, it had to do with some unresolved trust issues, sources told PEOPLE.
“She has been pretty miserable and didn’t think it was in her best interests to stay with Alex,” a friend of Lopez’s stated. “She insisted on it. There are too many issues that are unresolved,”
So did he cheat on her? It’s hard to say—there isn’t much evidence. But it doesn’t quite matter either way; Lopez couldn’t handle the thought of it ever happening, even if it didn’t.
“Whether or not he has cheated doesn’t matter,” says a music source. “She won’t tolerate the fear of it in the air between them.”
After the two broke up, Lopez immediately flew to Dominican Republic to film her upcoming comedy Shotgun Wedding—perhaps too get away from it all. But now, the issue of how to handle it with their kids from previous marriages, who have all become friends. Lopez has 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with ex-husband Mac Anthony, and Rodriguez has 13-year-old Ella and 16-year-old Natasha with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis.
“they’re especially sad for the kids since they are all so close,” says Lopez’s friend “It’s not a good situation but inevitable.”
The good news: Lopez is handling it like a champ, as she always does. The singer and actress has been through divorces, engagement break-offs, and regular break-ups, and says focusing on her kids and work always helps.
“Jennifer has been in these difficult situations before. She is not one to sit around and cry,” her friend told PEOPLE. “Her kids make her the happiest. She is doing well.”
While Jennifer has remained friends with Marc Anthony, who actually brought the kids to the Dominican to bring her some comfort, it’s not as likely that she’ll remain friendly with ARod.
“They will try to be friends, and there is respect there,” a source told PEOPLE. “But they are definitely going their separate ways.”
