The Empty Seat at the Royal Wedding Was Not to Honor the Late Princess Diana

Did you tune in to the royal wedding on May 19? How could you not have—it was being broadcast across pretty much every TV station. Even if you weren’t interested in watching it, you were likely forced to (and even if you don’t care to admit it, you probably loved it!).

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s long awaited wedding day has come and gone, and we all can’t stop talking about it. Everything went off without a hitch—her dress(es) were to die for, the flowers were lush and gorgeous, the vows were heartfelt and sweet, and everything just put a smile on our faces.

There was one sad thought on lots of people’s minds, however—and that was that we’re sure Prince Harry wished his late mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales, who passed away 20 years ago, could’ve been there to see him get married. It was likely on his new wife’s mind too, as she teared up when she gave her heartfelt speech to her own mother.

But there was one detail that left people were sure was a nod to Princess Diana—an empty chair by Prince William in the chapel. There have been rumors going around a spare seat next to Prince William.

But was it left to honor Princess Diana? It’s a logical thought: the spare seat was right in front of the chapel, and surrounded by immediate family.

However, royal reporter Rebecca English recently debunked this rumor in a tweet that stated, “Btw – I’ve seen some reports about the spare seat by Prince William in the chapel as having being left in memory of Princess Diana. It wasn’t empty for that reason. The seat in front of the Queen is always left empty, I am told by BP #royalwedding”

Apparently, it’s royal protocol to leave the seat in front of the queen empty so that she could have a perfectly clear view of what was going on in front of her. Who knew?

We know what you’re thinking: Why didn’t this come up during William and Kate’s wedding back in 2011? Well during that ceremony, the queen was seated in the front row, so she didn’t need to be accommodated then.

But don’t worry—Prince Harry did pay tribute to his mother in lots of ways. Harry had previously stated that he was “keen to involve his mother’s family in his wedding,” and he for sure did a good job of it.

For one thing, they used white garden roses for their wedding flowers hat adorned the ceremony space and outside the chapel. White roses are a flower that Prince Diana was known to love. And the flowers inside Meghan’s bouquet? Those were forget-me-nots, which reportedly were Diana’s favorites. Plus, the name of them is symbolic alone.

Additionally, they also played a song called “Guide me, O thy great redeemer,” which was played during Diana’s funeral. And there were lots more ways they honored here—you can read more about that here.

Did you think the empty seat was left for Princess Diana? We did at first! But we’re so glad she was honored in such special ways throughout the whole day (and that the queen was able to see everything going on!).
