When a couple gets married, they vow to stay together until death, but often that doesn’t happen. Many marriages end in divorce for various reasons, but one of those reasons sometimes has to do with one members of the couple straying and having an affair with someone else.

Some marriages survive an affair if the person who strayed is remorseful and the other person forgives them. They would have to choose to commit to their marriage in order to make it work.

Many marriages do not survive an affair, because honestly, it’s probably a symptom of a larger issue in the marriage. The person who strays may not feel committed to the marriage anymore, but instead of filing for divorce, simply tries to hide a dating relationship. This happened to actress Emma Thompson.

Thompson met her first husband, Kenneth Branagh, on the set of the 1987 series “Fortunes of War.” She first fell in love with his singing. She explained, “I burst into tears because he sounded exactly like my father singing on ‘The Magic Roundabout. He was incandescent with ambition and performance energy.”

At the height of their relationship, they were nicknamed “The Golden Couple,” but Thompson never felt comfortable with that nickname. She said, “I don’t think we wanted to be some power couple, and we certainly didn’t feel like it.”

Then, in 1994, on the set of “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” Branagh met another woman on set, actress Helena Bonham Carter, who played his love interest in the film. The on-screen romance continued off-screen and resulted in an affair that led to divorce.

Thompson didn’t know about the affair at first. She told The New Yorker, “I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set.” She added, “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”

After her marriage ended, Thomas explained that she no longer felt like “a lovable or worthy person.”

Thankfully, she eventually did find love again. She met Greg Wise on the set of “Sense and Sensibility,” and the two have now been married for 19 years. Thompson mused, “I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married.” She added, “As my mother says, ‘The first 20 years are the hardest.’”
