On February 27, 2021, the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA. That’s good news for everyone who is waiting to get vaccinated since there are now three vaccines available.
The Johnson and Johnson vaccine is not quite as effective as the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines when it comes to the original strain of COVID-19, but it has proven to be effective against the new South African strain of the virus with just one dose while the other vaccines may end up requiring a third dose.
In a statement, Paul Stoffels, M.D., Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chief Scientific Officer, Johnson & Johnson, explained, “We believe the Johnson & Johnson single-shot COVID-19 vaccine is a critical tool for fighting this global pandemic, particularly as it shows protection across countries with different variants. A vaccine that protects against COVID-19, especially against the most dire outcomes of hospitalization and death, will help ease the burden on people and the strain on health systems worldwide.”
Johnson & Johnson plans to ship enough doses of the vaccine to vaccinate 20 million Americans before the end of March, and they plan to ship 100 million doses of the vaccine by the end of June.
While multiple vaccines being approved by the FDA seems like a good thing, it can also make it harder for all of us to decide which vaccine to get. Should you take the Johnson and Johnson vaccine if it’s available or wait for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine instead? What’s the right decision?
According to Dr. Fauci, you should take whatever vaccine you can get. Watch the video below for more details.
