Have you always wanted a touch of rustic decor in your home? A great way to get the look is with a farmhouse table, which is a table with a distressed, wooden top. While this is a great piece of furniture to give your home that countryside, farm feel, it’s also a pretty expensive piece of furniture to just run out and buy on a whim. If the farmhouse table of your dreams is a little too out of your price range, you’re going to love this DIY. Using a cheap $10 IKEA table, YouTube channel Treasures & Travels transformed her cheap furniture find into an adorable, chic farmhouse coffee table.
This is such an easy, inexpensive DIY project, and it can be done to any size table you’d like! Although this tutorial is on a coffee table, you can easily turn a kitchen island, dining room table, desk, or bedside table into a rustic piece for next to nothing.
This video uses a Lack IKEA coffee table in white (this style of table also comes in brown and black) which she purchased for only $10. Again, you are not restricted to using only this type of table. However, you’d be hard pressed to find a better deal than this sleek IKEA steal!
Materials
- Table
- Screws
- Drill
- Reclaimed Wood
- Saw
Instructions
- Start with your table top, disconnected if it’s brand new or if it can be easily taken off the legs.
- Cut your wooden planks to size – you may or may not want the planks hanging over the edges of the table, that is up to personal preference.
- Line your cut planks up on your table top and start screwing in the center. Put two screws in the end of each table.
- Attach the legs of the table if they’re not on already.
There you have it! An easy, cheap farmhouse table that can be made all in the course of a lazy weekend at home. Now, if you don’t have access to reclaimed wood, an easy way to achieve that is by staining regular wooden planks that you can get bare at the hardware store. Here’s a great tutorial to staining planks to look like reclaimed wood.
After you’ve stained your wood, we would also suggest adding a coat or two of Wipe-On Poly. This Poly will keep the stain fresh and prevent it from fading. However, it’s important to be aware that the stain and Poly might warp the planks a bit; you might notice you’ll have a hard time pressing the planks side-by-side after the stain and Poly go on.
Whether or not you have to recreate the reclaimed wood or just pick it up from a scrapyard, the end result is going to be a super chic table that you made for next to nothing! A piece like this is going to elevate the look of your room and satisfy your DIY budget.
