Let’s face it, Millenials are always getting a whole lot of flack in the media, for a variety of reasons. The general consensus from Gen X and the Baby Boomers is that Millenials, aka folks born between 1981 and 1996, are just no-good technology addicts who are more interested in munching on avocados than going to work.

Obviously, those are some pretty sweeping sentiments that don’t quite capture the essence of the generation.

Well, except for the avocados, that is.

Everyone knows that Millenials love avocados. And the color pink.

But that’s beside the point because, FINALLY, Millenials are beginning to get attention for doing something good for the world. A study conducted by Philip N. Cohen of the University of Maryland, College Park, states that the generation is actually having a serious impact on the divorce rate here in the United States.

As a matter of fact, data shows that the divorce rate has fallen a staggering 18% from 2008 to 2016, and Millenials are to thank for it. Apparently, couples aged 22-37 are getting and staying married, while the older generations are continuing to get divorced at an exceedingly high rate–and that even goes for those who are currently in their 60s and 70s.

So, why is it that Millenials are so much better at marriage than their parents or older siblings? The consensus is that it’s because the majority waits to tie the knot until AFTER they have finished higher education, established a career, traveled, dated, etc, etc.

It just goes to show you that bringing life experience into a marriage is sometimes the “secret” to a long-lasting one!

We can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this divorce rate announcement. Are you surprised that Millenials are helping the divorce rate drop? Do you think that it will stick? Do you have any marriage advice of your own that you would like to share?
