Oh man…there’s just no hope for anyone! After 39 years—nearly four entire decades—of marriage, we’re sad to say that actor Dan Aykroyd and his wife Donna Dixon have officially announced that they’ve split up.

Right now, the two are still legally married and maintain a “loving friendship,” as they put it in a statement to PEOPLE. They just felt as though it was time to separate.

“After 39 years as a couple, we are now on separate life paths. We remain legally married, co-parents, co-workers and business partners,” the two stated. “This is our choice in loving friendship.”

Aykroyd, 69, and Dixon, 64, got married in April of 1983, which was not too long after they met on the set of “Doctor Detroit.” Aykroyd was previously engaged to the late Carrie Fisher in the early 1980s. The two have three daughters together: Danielle, 32; Belle, 28; and Stella, 24.

After they got married, Aykroyd and Dixon went on to star in many movies together, including “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (1983), “Spies Like Us” (1985), “The Couch Trip” (1988) and “Exit to Eden” (1994). Not only were they partners in life, but they were also partners in business, too.

Aykroyd and Dixon haven’t discussed much about their relationship in the past, but in 2014, Aykroyd alluded to the fact that all was perfect in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, and that Dixon was always the “right person” for him.

“You gotta find the right person — look them in the eye, have them look back, and know their soul,” he said at the time. “She’s a Southern woman who is understanding and doesn’t mind dealing with the boys from time to time.”

We’re sad to see them split, but are glad they’re able to find happiness in a friendship.

Did you think these two would ever split up? Do you think there’s hope that they’ll get back together?
