In 2002, senior citizen Jean Jacques moved into a nursing home called Forest Hill Manor. At the time, the home in Pacific Grove, California, was owned by a company called California-Nevada Methodist Homes.
According to Jacques, when she moved in, she signed an agreement with California-Nevada Methodist Homes that stated she could live there for the rest of her life, and for the past 22 years, that’s exactly what she has done.
Now, in 2024 at the age of 96, Jacques was given a 3-day eviction notice that claims she needs to pay $110,000 immediately in order to avoid being evicted from the home she has known for the past 20 years.
The New York Post reports that when Jacques moved into Forest Hill Manor, she paid a downpayment of $250,000, and she was also paying $5000 a month in rent. Eventually, her savings disappeared, and she doesn’t have any more money to pay.
In addition, California-Nevada Methodist Homes no longer owns the nursing home where Jacques lives. The company went bankrupt in 2022 and sold the nursing home to a company called Pacific Grove Senior Living.
When Pacific Grove Senior Living bought the nursing home, there was a clause in the contract where they agreed to honor the lifetime contracts signed by residents including Jacques. It doesn’t seem that Pacific Grove Senior Living is keeping their word.
When Jacques got the eviction notice she “was shocked.” She explained, “The reason I moved into Forest Hill Manor was to be taken care of for the rest of my life.”
She doesn’t have anywhere to go or any money to pay for another place to live.
Pacifica Senior Living is the parent company of Pacific Grove Senior Living, and they’re the ones who gave Jacques the eviction notice. The Alliance for Aging is trying to help Jacques fight the eviction notice.
