The people who created the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” are back with a new documentary. This one is specifically about the conservatorship Spears is desperately trying to end. It’s called “Controlling Britney Spears.”
Spears’ conservatorship started in 2008. It has been 13 years, and according to the filmmakers, Spears has been trying to get out of this conservatorship for much longer than anyone realized.
Good Morning America spoke to co-creators Liz Day and Samantha Stark about the new documentary. According to Day, when Spears spoke out against the conservatorship in June, it motivated multiple insiders to speak out and share what they knew about the conservatorship as well.
Stark explained, “I think Britney speaking was really powerful. These people in the film reached out to us because they wanted to share their story because they heard Britney speak.”
One of the insiders who came forward used to work for a security company called Black Box Security. This is the security company that Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, hired to monitor his daughter 24/7. In the documentary, this insider reveals details about what the security looked like and red flags that were raised for him.
Day explained, “When Jamie was appointed Britney’s conservator back in 2008, he was given the authority to hire security for Britney 24/7 and no one really knew what they did. They’d be in the background of photos with Britney, but the level of control and the ways that they monitored and surveilled her, we certainly didn’t know, and I don’t know that anyone ever knew before.”

Besides simply monitoring everything Spears’ did on her phone and in her home, the documentary creators discovered in court documents that the court even encouraged Spears’ lawyer to lie to her, and it seems that he did. Day explained, “Back in 2014, Britney’s court appointed lawyer told the court, ‘Britney wants to possibly get married and change her lifestyle but she believes the conservatorship precludes her from doing that.’ And the judge’s response was, ‘I think she can get married. I don’t think we ever removed that right from her, but you might not want to tell her that.’ And her lawyer seems to kind of laugh along and agree.”
“Controlling Britney Spears” in available to watch on Hulu and FX. Meanwhile, Spears next court hearing is September 29, this coming Wednesday.
