Why the Boy Scouts of America Are Weighing Filing for Bankruptcy

If you were in the Boy Scouts, or even the Girl Scouts, when you were younger, this news will probably upset you.

The Boy Scouts of America could be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy soon. And the reason is because of allegations of about a dozen men coming forward to claim that they were sexually abused as boys in the Boy Scouts.

Since August, the Boy Scouts of America have tried to remain afloat financially, but have had to battle with insurance companies about paying settlements.

“We remain in disputes with some carriers and look forward to a resolution that benefits victims and helps them on their journey towards healing,” BSA spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos said.

In a statement, Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh also made it clear that it’s their duty to pay anyone who has been affected by the sexual abuse lawsuits, even if it means filing for bankruptcy.

“We have a social and moral responsibility to fairly compensate victims who suffered abuse during their time in Scouting, and we also have an obligation to carry out our mission to serve youth, families and local communities through our programs,” he said in a statement.

Surbaugh also stated that the organization is “working with experts to explore all options available to ensure that the local and national programming of the Boy Scouts of America continues uninterrupted.”

It doesn’t sound good for the Boy Scouts, but who knows—they might be able to pull through.

The Boy Scouts have been around for over 100 years—since 1910—and have always been know for upholding moral values. And over the years, they’ve proved that even more so.

In 2014, they began to allow openly gay adults to be scout leaders, and in 2017, transgender boys as well as girls were allowed to enter the Scouts for the first time since their initiation.

In February of 2019, they were planning to change the name of Boy Scouts to simply “Scouts” to allow the addition of any gender entering the organization.

“Throughout our history we have taken proactive steps to help victims heal and prevent future abuse,” Surbaugh said. “I want to stress that at no time in our history have we knowingly allowed a sexual predator to work with youth, and we always seek to act swiftly when alerted to abuse allegations.”

In the statement, Surbaugh also expressed his sincere apology to anyone affected by the sexual abuse lawsuits.

“We care deeply about all victims of child sex abuse and we are steadfast in our belief that one incident of child abuse is one too many,” he said. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in our programs.”
