Music power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé have changed a young girl’s life with their generosity. Arizona teen Mikayla Lowry was tapped to receive a $100,000 college scholarship from the duo to attend the school of her choice.
Lowry was surprised with the announcement while attending the megastars’ On the Run II Tour in Glendale, Arizona. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are giving away scholarships to one student in each city stop on their tour.
Mikayla, a longtime member of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Phoenix, has an interest in studying marine biology and can now do that without worrying about the financial strain of going to school. She and other teens from the Boys & Girls Club were invited to attend the concert as guests.
When DJ Khaled announced the recipient’s name during the show, he referred to Mikayla as “an extraordinary individual making a difference in the world” and a “young genius.” The high school senior is also dually enrolled in a local community college and will graduate with an Associate’s degree.
Upon hearing her name, Mikayla and all of her friends couldn’t contain their excitement. She is slated to begin college next fall.
And it’s not the first time this musical couple has done charitable work. “Bey” and “Jay” are known for making quiet donations to various charities around the world through their respective foundations, the Shawn Carter Foundation and the BeyGOOD Initiative, and both provide aid to local communities.
