PBS just surprised fans during the season premiere of Arthur, the kids’ show about a brainy aardvark, his family, and best buds. After 22 years on the air, the show had its first same-sex wedding.
Who got married? Well, it was a wonderful kind of day for Arthur’s teacher Mr. Ratburn in the episode titled, “Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone.” At first, Arthur and his crew assumed he was going to marry a mean woman named Patty who they believed to be the wrong one for him.
But after some hijinks, they discovered at the wedding that Patty was his sister. They enjoyed watching Mr. Ratburn marry his aardvark groom, Patrick.
For the most part, the episode is being applauded on social media with fans being pleasantly surprised calling it “touching,” and even GLAAD chimed in to congratulate the character. Others were not on board with such a character being in a kids’ cartoon, but to PBS, it’s about representation.
The network told People:
“PBS KIDS programs are designed to reflect the diversity of communities across the nation. We believe it is important to represent the wide array of adults in the lives of children who look to PBS KIDS every day.”
This is not the first time same-sex unions have been in kids’ television shows. Arthur tried it back in 2005, and Nickelodeon’s The Loud House features a character who has two dads. If you want to see the Arthur episode, it’s streaming on the PBS website here.
Do you think this was a cool thing to do on Arthur? Are you just as excited or surprised as other adult fans on social media?
