People get divorced for all kinds of reasons—and most of the time, it winds up being a blessing in disguise, especially if you have children. It’s never good for a child to be raised in a home with parents who aren’t getting along, or worse, yelling at each other all the time.

Even celebrity couples go through it—including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The two got together in 2004 and officially got married in 2014. However, just two years later in 2016, the two filed for divorce citing their “irreconcilable differences.”

Needless to say, fans were shocked. But what’s even more shocking is Jolie’s recent revelation that part of the reason for the divorce was that she feared for the safety of her five children: Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 15, twins Vivienne and Knox, 13, and Maddox, 20.

When the two announced their split, Angelina’s estranged father, Jon Voight, speculated to the media that “something severe must have happened.” And he was right. Not long after the decision was made, it came out that Jolie had filed charges of child abuse against Pitt.

While the charges had been cleared, they seemed to be linked to an incident that occurred on a private plane from the US to Europe that Pitt yelled at his oldest son, Maddox. Jolie filed for divorce just five days after the incident (though it was never mentioned that he harmed his son or anyone else).

Additionally, Pitt checked into Alcoholics Anonymous after the divorce and admitted to having some alcohol problems.

To this day, the ex-couple are still in the middle of a custody battle for their children, excluding Maddox, since he is no longer a minor.

When questioned if she ever feared for the safety of her children during her marriage, Jolie replied, “Yes, for my family. My whole family.”

“I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly,” she added. “It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”

Though the experience has been miserable for her and her family, Jolie says that she wants the best for everyone, even Pitt.

“It’s not that I want to talk about anything, really, because I just want my family to heal. And I want everyone to move forward — all of us, including their dad. I want us to heal and be peaceful. We’ll always be a family,” she said.

The two both live in California—after Jolie decided to buy a home there so that her children could live in close proximity to their father.

“Right now I’m having to base where their father chooses to live,” she said.

Did suspect anything like this when Jolie and Pitt first got together? What do you think of Jolie’s statements?
