Alex Trebek hosted the game show “Jeopardy!” for 37 years. Except for a brief hiatus in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Trebek was ready and able to host show after show. He didn’t even let pancreatic cancer slow him down.
Unfortunately, on November 8, 2020, at the age of 80 years old, Trebek lost his battle with cancer, and the world lost a highly respected man who was liked by everyone. Trebek wanted “Jeopardy!” to go on without him, and it will, but not quite yet.
Back in October, Trebek was in the studio filming more episodes of “Jeopardy!” In fact, he hosted enough new episodes that the producers were originally planning on airing the final episode on Christmas Day. That’s about 2 months of new episodes!
After announcing that Trebek’s final “Jeopardy!” episode would air on Christmas, producers of the show changed their minds and decided to do something a little bit different. From December 21, 2020, through January 1, 2021, instead of seeing new episodes of the show “Jeopardy!” fans were treated to some of the best and most memorable episodes Trebek ever hosted. A Sony representative said that one of the reasons for this scheduling change was “to give his millions of fans a chance to see his final appearances.”
The actual last episodes of “Jeopardy!” with Trebek as the host will air this week from January 4 through January 8, 2021. The episodes will air on network TV at their usual time. Even if you don’t have cable or access to a paid streaming service, you should be able to tune in with an antenna and watch these historic and final episodes.
According to a representative from Sony, the final episode on January 8 will also include “a special tribute to the life and work of the man who captained America’s Favorite Quiz Show with skill, style, and sophistication for 36+years.”
After Trebek’s final episodes air, the next episodes will feature Ken Jennings as the first of several guest hosts. There has been some controversy surrounding Jennings and an inappropriate tweet, but many fans think that he is an appropriate choice to host the show.
If you’re looking for a more fun way to say goodbye to Trebek as the host of “Jeopardy!” you could consider playing a virtual game of the show with your family and friends. You could also binge watch some of Trebek’s classic episodes on Netflix.
