Airbnb Has Now Permanently Banned Parties For Rental Bookings

Airbnb has changed the way many people travel. Instead of staying at a hotel, a resort or with family, we now have the option of renting a home in a neighborhood and living like a local. Some of these rentals have cool perks like swimming pools and unusual decor or features. Some seem like the perfect place to throw a party.

In the beginning, Airbnb allowed hosts rent out their homes for parties. Guests could invite friends and family to the rental home for their event. This worked out well for a lot of guests and hosts, but there were issues.

In 2019, Airbnb started to restrict what kinds of parties were allowed at rentals. In a news release, the company explained, “We tightened our measures to prohibit both ‘open-invite’ parties (i.e., those advertised on social media) as well as ‘chronic party houses’ that had developed into neighborhood nuisances. At that time, we also launched our Neighborhood Support Line in a number of jurisdictions as a direct line for neighbors to communicate any concerns to Airbnb, which has helped us enforce that prohibition on party houses.”

In 2020, Airbnb temporarily banned parties altogether. This was due to the pandemic. Airbnb explained, “When the pandemic hit, as many bars and clubs closed or restricted their occupancy, we began to see some people taking partying behavior to rented homes, including through Airbnb. This was concerning to us due to both the disruptive nature of unauthorized parties and the risk of such gatherings spreading the virus. As such, we announced the party ban to our community as being ‘in the best interest of public health.'”

Originally, the party ban was temporary, but now, Airbnb has decided to make that party ban permanent. Watch the video below for more details.

Guests and hosts who violate the party ban may end up having their account suspended or even get permanently banned from the Airbnb platform.

While Airbnb is no longer allowing their homes to be rented out for parties, they are lifting one restriction that was put in place during the pandemic. Back in 2020, along with banning parties, Airbnb also set a limit on the number of guests that could stay in a rental at one time. The cap was set at 16 even if the home was large enough to accommodate more people. That cap has been lifted.

Do you think guests and hosts will respect Airbnb’s party ban? Have you ever held a party at a rental house?
