If one of your New Year’s Resolutions was to declutter your home, you probably already know about the Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” Watching it just might reignite your desire to declutter.
Marie Kondo became famous when she published her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” in Japan back in 2011 and in the United States in 2014. Her methods have been talked about on shows like “The Gilmore Girls” and “The Mindy Project.”
If she wasn’t already a household name in your home, she should be by now. Her new Netflix show is totally binge watch worthy. It’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t know how to let go of all the clutter, how to organize or how to maintain a clutter-free lifestyle.
While you can certainly binge watch the show on Netflix or pick up a copy of her book, if you’re eager to start decluttering and organizing your home right now, we thought we’d make it easier for you by giving you a cheat sheet of sorts.
One of our favorite takeaways from the show is the idea that anyone really can declutter. For example, Kondo encourages parents to fold clothes and tidy up with their kids so that the kids learn what to do.
Kids do often pick up on their parents’ habits, so this sounds like a good plan to us. Plus, the idea of our kids putting their own clothes and toys away neatly would be epic.
Another great idea Kondo shares is the idea of storing things so that you can see what you have. This will prevent you from rebuying something just because you didn’t know you already have one (or, let’s be honest, 3+) hiding somewhere in your home.
Going along with the tip above, everything should have a place where it goes when you’re not using it. That will make it easier to put things away since you’ll know right where to put it. It will also make it easier to find what you’re looking for, since you’ll know right where to look.
MsMojo put together a list of the top 10 Marie Kondo tips. Some include storing items based on how often you use them and organizing items by size. You can see details about all 10 of these life-changing tips, including some that sound a little odd at first, in the video below.
