What Not to Buy in Bulk

Bulk-buying bargains are all over the place, but sometimes, as we all know, it’s just not worth it to buy certain things in bulk. If you can’t use something up before it goes bad, chances are you didn’t score much of a bargain. Here are a few things that you might not have realized could be bad bulk buys:

  • Brown Rice: brown rice actually has a shorter shelf life than white rice (about 6 months). It may be worth it to buy brown rice in the smaller bags unless you eat a lot of the stuff.
  • Bleach: surprisingly, bleach starts to lose its effectiveness after about 6 months. So go for the smaller jugs unless you have serious bleaching needs.
  • Spices: take a look at your cooking habits to see what you actually use a lot of. Since spices lose their spice around the 6 month mark, it’s not worth it to buy jumbo containers of what you can’t use up by that time.
