Participate in Research Studies to Earn Extra Cash

Submitted by: Tip Hero  08/15/2008 12:57 PM

GetRichSlowly.org, a terrific personal finance blog, has a recent post about how you can make money by participating in just a few hours of medical research or other types of studies that pay you for a small amount of your time and effort.

While not a reliable source of income, finding a few studies to be a part of every now and then can be a nice little bonus. The article leads off talking about a recent experience involving participation in a neuroeconomics study and getting paid $120 for about 90 minutes of time (not including what turned out to be a lengthy commute).

The article goes on to talk about other ways to supplement your regular income and also provides ideas for how to find these opportunities. Also included in the post is a link to an interesting article written by Donna Freedman for MSN. Donna notes:

"If you've set a specific goal - paying down credit card debt, saving toward a $500 emergency fund - consider taking on a side job or two. The advantage of these occasional gigs is that they're, well, occasional."
Donna goes on to talk about various quick and easy ways to add to your income from time to time, such as:

  • Be a mystery shopper (Donna offers tips on how you can become one)
  • Participate in medical studies (similar to GetRichSlowly, Donna explains how you can find these opportunities)
  • Be a residence/apartment manager (can reduce your rent for what typically amounts to a relatively small amount of work)
  • Babysitting (she explains how it can be very little work - while also rewarding - for a little extra cash on the side)

I used to get called up to do marketing focus groups quite a bit. You typically get paid $50-$100 for sitting in a room with two-way mirrors and microphones hanging from the ceiling answering questions about a product category. They typically last 2-3 hours. I did focus groups on beer, movie theatres, and clothing. Pretty fun and an easy way to make a few extra bucks.

Not sure how I got on the list to be called for market focus groups. You might do an internet search to find marketing research groups in your area and call them up and asked to be considered for future groups.

Anonymous--where are you located? I live in Boston and see ads for medical research studies all the time in the paper and online on craigslist. Look up your city on craiglist.com and go to the jobs section and type in "research studies" and then see if you qualify for any of them. Some are pretty specific, but there are almost always paid sleep studies! But this just might be because there are a lot or research hospitals in Boston.

My husband and I finally accepted an invitation to participate in a flu vaccine research program almost a year ago. The key was that both vaccines were "real", but only one had FDA approval.

The same day we took our flu shots, I had to go to the ER with symptoms that indicated a possible stoke or heart attack plus dehydration. My husband had no problems at all.

When I reported the incident as required, the representative told me there was absolutely no connection and she was not going to report it. I recorded it on my journal as required by the contract we signed.

Several months later, we were called back for a special interview that included the opportunity for those who had gotten the 'study' vaccine to receive the FDA approved flu shot as we normally would have done.

I explained that on two more occasions I had had to go to the ER with similar symptoms to the first time. I had to be transported on the third trip to the hospital because my B/P and my pulse were dangerously high. The young lady once again refused to document these two additional incidents.

She did explain that I had received the new drug while my husband had received the other drug. I am still dealing with various neurological problems although this test began last September.

I will never go through such an ordeal. Even though we received a total of $550 for the two of us, my medical expenses have exceeded that amount by a huge margin.

Think twice before agreeing to any offer of cash for the use of your body...It may also be a tax on your soul if your feedback is completely ignored.

I keep wondering how many times this sort of thing has happened in the past...Do you remember Thalidamide?

Has anyone donated plasma? I understand you can get paid for that. What are the risks and benefits of donating? Would you recommend donating? Thank you for any advice.

About donating plasma, as long as it is a sanitary place it is a great thing to do b/c it is used in so many ways to help people, and it is pretty simple, they take your blood, remove the plasma, and put the blood back in your body, you must weigh a certain amount (you can't be too thin) make sure you eat a healthy meal before you donate, I got a little dizzy and light headed the first time.

    Hi guys.

Are there any good alternatives to rapidshare?

I mean sites where you don't have to wait or pay.

What about hotfile? I heard they also pay.

The response to local and national disasters is awesome but it's a real shame that so many people take advantage of the negative situations.

I mean everytime there is an earthquake, a flood, an oil spill - there's always a group of heartless people who rip off tax payers.

This is in response to reading that 4 of Oprah Winfreys "angels" got busted ripping off the system. Shame on them!

I gave blood plasma too. They were great; very friendly and open, explaining everything very clearly and answering all of my questions. The first thing they did before anything else was give me a complete physical, blood tests and all. They are very clean and careful, for obvious reasons, but also they do want you back if you qualify, as many people don't. The first session takes about 3 hours because of all the screening, etc., but after that it's only about an hour and a half. Most places pay $50 for the first time and $45 each time after that. You can donate up to twice a week, so it's really a great way to make money while knowing you are doing something to help people. The only down side is you do have to be quite stocky if you're short like me. I had to gain 20 pounds to be eligible, which I loathed having to do, but hey, I was desperate for the money. I was very healthy when I was thinner so I don't think it would have been that big of a deal, but they had their rules and would not bend them. But the above poster is right - you MUST drink tons of liquids (preferable water) the night before and the day of the donation, and a good meal before is also a necessity if you don't want to be too woozy to drive home. If you don't have tattoos (or if it's been over a year since you got the last one), have no blood-borne diseases or chronic ones that don't go away, like herpes or hepatitis, and don't do drugs or take certain prescribed medications, you can do this.

"That bucket of stuff has extra-strong fumes, I'd let it sit for awhile. I mixed acid and chlorine together because just the acid wouldn't wash away the algae in the (outdoor) showers."

This was from my lifeguarding supervisor, who unknowingly made chlorine gas, a WWI chemical weapon, because he thought mixing the two chemicals that we are never, ever supposed to let mix would make a good cleaning solution. Then he went home and left me with a vat of highly toxic chemicals.
