The Secret to Getting HBO Without Cable and Paying Less

If you’re looking to let go of the cost of cable but can’t go without your fix of Game of Thrones or other HBO shows, then the Wall Street Journal has some important information to share with you.

HBO may not sell access to their streaming service (HBO Go) with customers directly, but recently, many big cable companies have started to offer packages that just include internet, HBO (with HBO Go) and very basic cable. However, these packages aren’t widely advertised. You have to know about these “secret menu options” when you call to change your service. Here’s what the HBO option is called with each big cable company:

Comcast: “Internet Plus”

Time Warner Cable: “Starter TV+HBO and an Internet plan”

Verizon FiOS: “50/25 Mbps + Local News and Sports + HBO (or Showtime)”

AT&T U-Verse: “HBO Internet Plus”

Here’s what Geoffrey of The Wall Street Journal had to say about his experience:

I called up some of the biggest cable companies and representatives from four talked about the packages they offer. This worked for my family with Comcast. We called their hotline and said we wanted to “downgrade” service. After we said the magic words “Internet Plus,” we were able to switch from a triple-play package costing $212 per month to “Internet plus” with broadband, about 10 cable channels and HBO (with HBO Go) for about $75 per month. Keep in mind, this eliminates landline phone service through the cable company.

Have any of you Tip Heroes had luck with ordering a basic HBO plan from a cable company?
