These Stores Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving to Allow Employees to be With Their Families

Black Friday: whether you love it, or hate it, there’s no denying that the biggest shopping day of the year has become a de facto holiday in and of itself. And while shopping for Christmas presents the day after Turkey Day has been a tradition for decades, snagging deals into the middle of the night is a fairly new phenomenon that may have died down a bit in recent years.

You see, more and more large retailers who used to embrace the throngs of 12:00 a.m. Black Friday visitors are putting an end to the madness, much to their employees’ relief. We don’t know about you, but seeing folks bagging goods at a big box store on Thanksgiving—whether it be at 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 a.m.—never felt quite “right” to us.

Sure, retail workers should expect packed schedules during the holidays, but should anyone have to deal with stampedes of greedy shoppers on Thanksgiving night?

We have a feeling that no one’s going to miss THAT guy!

Why more and more retailers aren’t giving into the Black Friday hype

Okay so these retailers may not have made the decision to close their doors on the holiday out of the goodness of their hearts. As of the last few years, Cyber Monday sales typically outperform Black Friday deals. Perhaps not surprisingly, in 2020, Cyber Monday hit $10.8 billion (with Black Friday at $9 billion), which Adobe Analytics reports as the largest online shopping day in U.S. history.

With the marketplace continuing to undergo this shift, it doesn’t make sense for large retailers to keep their doors open, especially considering these companies end up shelling out time-and-a-half or more for their hourly employees on the holiday. Makes sense!

Here’s the full list of the retailers who have officially announced their closures so far for 2021. In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted on the decisions of others who have closed in recent years but have yet to make their schedule public for the season.
