Why More And More People Are Finding Snakes In Their Toilets

If you have ophidiophobia, or the fear of snakes, we urge you to stop reading this now. What’s going on in some people’s toilets is literally your worst nightmare. Heck, even people who aren’t deathly afraid of snakes aren’t having fun with this strange, crazy situation going on.

Okay, ready for this? It turns out that snakes have been showing up in a totally unexpected place in people’s homes—their toilets! That’s right, imagine going to the bathroom to do your business, and you see a massive anaconda just hanging out in the bowl. We can imagine that suddenly your “business” is all over the floor!

I mean, seriously? I get up to go to the bathroom all the time in the middle of the night. Now I’m going to check to make sure there’s not a snake in the toilet bowl before I sit down? This seems like cruel and unusual punishment!

The crazy thing is snakes showing up in toilet bowls is more common than we think. One man in North Carolina named Mike Green says he has found (and yanked out) six snakes from his toilet in the past four years—six! Someone even found a python in their toilet in Australia, which is known as one of the largest snakes in the world. Can you even?

It doesn’t just happen to us common folk either—even famous country singer Brett Eldredge has fallen victim to the snake in the toilet bowl. When he was on vacation in the Bahamas, he walked into the bathroom to find a huge snake just hanging out in the toilet.

So what gives? How does a snake possibly get into your toilet? It turns out that snakes can easily squeeze through ventilation pipes on the top of your roofs, slither its way all the way through, and come out on the other end: Your toilet.

“They’re sleek animals that can fit into tight spaces in their environment, and they feel more comfortable in tight, dark spaces. So they’ll go into a pipe and feel very good about it. And then navigate through the sewer system, in some cases, and then find their way up into somebody’s toilet,” says Ian Recchio, the curator of reptiles at the Los Angeles Zoo, and, ironically, a former plumber.

While you may want to just try to flush it away, that won’t work out so well. So if you find a snake in your toilet, call Animal Control immediately. They’ll be able to not only get rid of the snake for you, but identify the snake.

The good news is that most snakes are harmless; however, there is that chance you could have a dangerous one in there, so it’s good to know what to do in the unfortunate event you ever find yourself in this situation. Talk about the shock of your life.
