British Royal Family’s Newest Canine Addition Is Neither A Corgi Nor From The UK

Everyone knows that when you get married, you’re also marrying any pets your spouse might have—especially man’s best friend, the dog. I mean, if you don’t love my dog, do you even love me?

The same goes for even the most royal bride and groom. We’ve heard a lot about the royal wedding and marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle – now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – but we haven’t heard much about their furry friends.

It was back in 2015 when Meghan Markle adopted one of her rescue dogs, a beagle named Guy. Guy was adopted when he was just 3 years old from A Dog’s Dream Rescue, a Kentucky and Ohio-based nonprofit that specializes in rescuing beagles, and who took Guy in after he was brought to a kill shelter in Kentucky.

It was the weekend after Guy’s arrival when Meghan took the dog home and made him part of her family. So naturally, Guy is now a member of the royal family, since where Meghan goes, Guy goes—and everyone is welcoming the pup with open arms.

Why is this a big deal? Well, on the day of the royal wedding, Guy was seen riding with the queen to Windsor Castle, where the Harry and Meghan tied the knot, which is a pretty big thing for the queen.

Queen Elizabeth is known for her love of Pembroke Welsh Corgis ever since she was a child, and has owned more than 30 of them in the time she’s been the queen! In fact, the queen’s royal corgis are known across the entire world, and have been commemorated in all sorts of ways, from statues to works of art.

Even the crown coin, which displays the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, displays her alongside a corgi. Additionally, because of just how much the queen loves the Welsh Corgi, the number of corgis that were exhibited in the 1954 West Australian Canine Association’s Royal Show increased immensely.

Guy isn’t a corgi, and he isn’t from the U.K. So the fact that the queen was so accepting of a beagle—Meghan’s beagle—shows just how much she supports and loves her new granddaughter-in-law.

We also think there’s some pretty cool symbolism there, considering Meghan Markle isn’t a royal or from the U.K. either. But everyone accepted her with open arms, just like everyone is accepting the non-corgi, non-U.K. based pup, Guy, as well.

“I have two dogs that I’ve had for quite a long time, both my rescue pups,” Meghan said. “And one is now staying with very close friends and my other little guy is—yes he’s in the U.K., he’s been here for a while. I think he’s doing just fine.” He’s definitely doing just fine, especially with the Queen’s support!

What do you think of the new royal couple having a non-Corgi, non-U.K. dog? We think Guy is a pretty lucky pup for having so many royals and people who love him!
