Preparing this shot is a piece of cake (don’t worry, that’s the last cake pun we can think of). And you don’t have to be a professional bartender to pull off a stacked shot. (But if you make these for your friends they might be so impressed that they try to tip you anyways.) All you have to do is recall the theory of specific gravity from your high school physics class. No? OK just remember this: alcohol floats, and sugar sinks — which is why you’ll end up with a red layer of grenadine on the bottom, and yellow layer of pineapple-spiked vodka on top.

The ingredients themselves are extremely simple: vanilla vodka makes the shooter taste like actual cake batter, while fresh pineapple juice and cherry grenadine give it a fruity zing.

Pineapple upside-down cake — that retro, flippable treat with caramelized pineapple and maraschino cherries on top (or on bottom, depending on which way you look at it) — was popularized in 1925 by Dole as a way of promoting their new-fangled invention: pineapple rings. But in those prohibition days, old Mr. Dole probably never dreamed that the cake would one day morph into a shooter.

We thought we’d imagined pineapple upside-down cake in all of its possible forms: we’ve perfected the classic cake, of course, but we’ve also given it a cute makeover in a muffin tin, taken it to a hole new level as a bundt cake, cooked up a way to eat it for breakfast as pancakes, and even turned it into fudge. Those recipes are all amazing, but it turns out they were lacking the one thing that makes almost everything better: booze. So bottom’s up!
