Oprah’s 25 Ways to Save Money

Oprah.com has a list of “25 Ways to Save a Bundle”. We listed headlines for all 25 below. And since a lot of these tips have already been posted in one form or another here on Tip Hero, we provide links to these tips where appropriate.

1. Cheap Flights – They suggest signing up to Spirit Airlines’ “$9 fare club”. Since we’re not members, we can’t say for sure if it’s really a good deal (we’re a bit skeptical, but please let us know if you’ve had a good experience with this club by leaving a comment below).

2. Save at BuyBuy Baby – We like this one. We get 20% off Bed Bath & Beyond coupons in the mail every now and then and end up throwing them away (recycling, to be more precise). But now that they’re owned by BB&B, we can use the coupon on BuyBuy Baby goods: “That means a Chicco KeyFit 30 Cortina Travel System, normally $330, would be $264.” More.

3. Free Lipstick – We didn’t know about this one: “Return six empty containers of MAC products (a blush compact, for example) to a MAC counter or to the company and receive a free lipstick of your choice. (For information, go to MacCosmetics.com and click on Giving Back.)”

4. Private Online Sample Sales – Check out a couple of tips here on Tip Hero that speak to this one:

5. Free Software – We’ve covered this one too:

6. Cheap Event Tickets – “TravelZoo.com … has a Deals Near You section, where you can learn about reduced-rate tickets for theater, concerts, and special events in your area (just enter your zip code).” More.

7. Discounted Hair Care and Massages – “At Aveda Institutes, for instance, you can get $15 to $25 cuts (AvedaInstitutes.com). You might also try massage schools: The American Massage Therapy Association lists institutions on its site, searchable by state (AmtaMassage.org/amta-cos).” More.

8. Restaurant.com – We’ve got a couple of tips on this subject:

9. Search for Deals and Coupons

10. Reduce Your Homeowner’s Insurance Rates – “Most homeowner’s premiums are neatly incorporated into the mortgage payment, so consumers don’t consider reviewing them. That’s a mistake. If you shop around and find something better, call your insurance provider and ask what they can do for you … You can typically expect about 15 percent savings.” More.

11. Save at Staples – “Bring your toner cartridge back to Staples and receive $3 off the purchase of anything in the store or online.”

12. Frequent Customer Cards – “Cosi sandwich shops have a CosiCard … At my local nail salon, a manicure is $10, but with the card, every tenth one is free.” More.

13. Take Over Someone Else’s Lease – “Consider taking over someone else’s lease through SwapALease.com or LeaseTrader.com.” More.

14. Save an Extra $330 on Public Transit Commuting Costs – “The maximum tax-free transit benefit for commuters who use public transportation increased from $120 to $230 a month.” More.

15. Reduce Your Car Insurance Rate – “Many companies offer lower rates if you have an anti-theft system, a garage, if you’re a non-smoker, or if you’re between ages 30 and 60.” More.

16. Bring Your Own Bag – We’re big believers in this one. Bringing your own bags when you shop for groceries or other items is good for the environment, the bags we bring can hold a lot and are a lot easier to carry (we’re big fans of this basket on UrbanSherp.com) and Oprah has 8 favorites, and can save you money (“Stop & Shop, for example, gives a 5-cent refund to shoppers who bring their own bags”).

17. Swap Books – We’ve got a couple of tips on this subject:

18. Save on Bras – “Instead of buying new sizes, you can buy one bra that will expand with you. La Leche League International Intimates by Q-T’s adjustable Wrap N Snap nursing bra costs $19.50 at LLLIClothes.com.” More.

19. Review Your Bills Closely – “You might find anything from unrequested subscription renewals on your credit card bill to accidental double charges from retailers.” More.

20. E-mail Your Text Messages – “It’s free to send text messages to a cell phone from your computer – just type your friend’s cell phone address into the “to” box in the e-mail header. For Verizon Wireless customers, the address is the [email protected]; for AT&T, [email protected]; for T-Mobile, [email protected]; for Sprint, [email protected].”

21. Hit Sales Early – To find out about sales at your favorite stores, “ask a clerk which day is markdown day and show up first thing the next morning.” More.

22. Check the Price By Phone – “Call 1-888-DO-FRUCALL and type in the bar code number of the product in question. Frucall’s free service will tell you the range of prices that online retailers, including Amazon.com, charge for the same item.” More.

23. Use Your Flexible Spending Account – “A person making $35,000 could save $200 on taxes.” More.

24. Farm Fresh For Less – “Pay $20-$30 (some require minimal community service as well) a week (or do a $10 half share for 1-2 people) in exchange for fresh veggies straight from the farm.” More.

25. High Art, Low Prices – “Many museums offer free or discounted admission at particular times.” More.
