NICU Families Celebrate Halloween With the Most Adorable Costume Contest

Halloween is such a fun holiday for people of any age. Whether you’re dressing up in a cool costume or handing out candy to tick-or-treaters, it’s truly a holiday everyone enjoys celebrating, old or young…even the really, really young.

We’re talking premature-baby young.

South Miami Hospital decided that they wanted to hold a costume contest for babies who were in their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Since being in the NICU isn’t exactly a fun time, these nurses figured the parents could use a smile or two. And they couldn’t have been more right.

Parents dressed their precious preemies in the cutest costumes—from a Viking, to a buccaneer, and popular video game character Mario. Each costume was cuter than the next.

But aside from just a fun photo op, dressing their babies up made most of the parents a bit emotional. It meant that they got to get into the Halloween spirit and celebrate their first Halloween as a family.

Not only do these parents not get to see their babies dressed in fun clothes, they don’t get to do a lot of things the average family gets to do at all. So making light out of the situation and getting to celebrate really helped.

“We should all be out here celebrating our little superheroes because they’re incredibly resilient,” says Dr. Jorge Perez, Director of the NICU Medical Staff. “For these parents and for these children, it probably gives them just a moment of normalcy.”

Out of the 62 babies in the NICU, 12 competed in the costume contest, and boy are they cute as anything!
