McDonald’s to Offer Free Wireless Internet

Starting in mid January 2010 McDonald’s is going to start offering free wifi, wireless interent at 11,000 of its 13,000 locations throughout the United States. David Groom McDonald’s Chief Information Officer told the Dallas Morning News that “Free means Free” customers will not be required to purchase anything to use the service. Talking with the LA Times Mr. Bloom goes on to say: “We don’t mind at all if people step in, take advantage of the Wi-Fi and linger a bit”.

AT&T provides the wireless infastructure for both McDonald’s and Starbucks so it will be very interesting to see if Starbucks follows suit and begins to offer free wireless service itself. I think this is a smart move on the part of McDonalds because it will attract more customers and keep those there around a little longer to buy an extra cup of coffee.
