What This Jogger Did to a Homeless Man’s Stuff Has a Whole City Talking

Every single day, we try our best to bring you feel-good stories from all across the globe, whether it’s a story of a kind-hearted civilian helping out a service member and his family, or an example of a police officer going above and beyond to make a community member feel safe, or a grief-stricken mother who wants to bring a little hope into the world via a birthday cake.

Yep, we sure have covered some heartwarming — and tear-jerking! — tales over the years, but there are also times when we need to report some not-so-happy circumstances that are occurring around our country.

Take today’s story, for instance. It involves a jogger who, for reasons we can’t quite wrap our head around, decided to destroy a homeless man’s property.

Yep, we’re not kidding.

This all went down last week at Oakland, California’s popular Lake Merritt. There, a jogger – who was later identified as Bay Area resident, Henry Sintay – was recorded throwing a local homeless man’s belongings into the lake and nearby trash cans as horrified passersby attempted to intervene.

One such person, JJ Harris, did what so many people do these days when they encounter a shameful public act: he whipped out his smartphone, pressed the “record” button, and posted the clip to his Twitter account.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the recording went viral, with local residents and the Twittersphere alike displaying their outrage through thousands upon thousands of retweets and comments.

As a matter of fact, the clip even got the attention of the Oakland Police Department, who vowed to arrest the jogger once he was identified. Just days later, Sintay was brought into custody in Dublin, CA, where he was booked on robbery charges and held on $100,000 bail.

The homeless victim of this shameful act

According to information provided by the Bay Area’s Mercury News, the victim behind last week’s theft was a man by the name of Greg Markson, otherwise known as Jarew, who has been a fixture in the Lake Merritt area for years.

One nearby resident, Cari Geldreich, described Markson as being “gentle” and “very humble.” Geldreich added that she, unlike Sintay, does her part to lend a hand to the homeless man when she can, whether it’s by bringing him a bag of apples or offering to wash his blankets at a local laundromat.

Luckily for Markson, it seems that Geldreich isn’t the only one who is offering him kindness after his ordeal. Many concerned community members have also done their part to replace what was damaged by Sintay.

Markson told the newspaper that he was “grateful for the help and concern.” He also added that he didn’t want to see the perpetrator prosecuted because “we all have bad days sometimes.”

And, that, folk, is a CLASS ACT.
